Barbara Kruger

Barbara Kruger visually captures the zeitgeist of the modern feminist movement through her stark graphic images.  Her work often depicts young women photographed in black and white. A red banner with white text is often plastered over the face of these women. These pieces bring to question the patriarchal standards we expect of young women. The unknowingly defiant freedom of the young girls evokes a hope for a more equitable future. These children are free of their biases and a canvas for the viewers dreams. The powerful red overwhelms these women and brings our attention to the words instead. We focus more on what her work says rather than the people behind it. Her work has only gotten more prevalent as our society becomes increasingly advertisement based.
